NEW WEBSITE COMING SOON!
It involves inserting a probe down the hair shaft reaching the base of the hair where the root is located and
applying current to kill the hair root ensuring no more hair grows from that follicle.
There is a small amount of discomfort involved in Electrolysis treatment however the new Apilus Xcell Pro assists by
reducing pain by 25% over other machines. The new state of the art, Apilus Xcell Pro, makes electrolysis permanent
hair removal easy and fast so you can get on with the business of living your new hair free life!
New clients are always welcome - there is no limit on how many clients I accept (except for genital clients (please enquire)).
To get the most benefit out of your electrolysis treatment please carefully read
the Pre / During / Post sections below to achieve your best outcome.
+PRE-Treatment Information
Read all the Electrolysis information here to give you the best outcome for your treatment
Drink more water 3 days before your appt (you can safely double your water consumption - health guidelines are 2.5 litres daily)
Don't eat salty foods (chips, crackers, olives, cheeses etc) 1-2 weeks before your appt - Yes, this matters!
Don't drink alcohol 1-2 weeks before your appt
Apply moisturiser twice daily to face &/or body depending on where treatment is being done
Buy numbing cream specific to the area you are having treatment (genital will require special numbing cream see below)
Please read the approximate skin healing times in POST Treatment (below) to ensure you allow your skin time to heal after your appt.
Please note that your skin WILL require healing after electrolysis. Depending on how difficult your hairs are to remove, as to how strong the current needs to be used to remove your hairs.
If you have any upcoming social occasions please be aware you may need to reschedule your first electrolysis appt so as not to interfere with your social commitments.
This treatment involves sliding a fine, hair like probe (needle) down the hair follicle and applying current to cauterise (kill) the hair root. This is Electrolysis, NOT laser. Please do NOT shave your skin. You must allow your hair to grow 3-4mm out of the skin to have electrolysis. You may experience side effects such as swelling, white spots, reddened areas, mild swelling, soreness, sensitivity and possibly breakouts. You may also experience PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) about 4 weeks after electrolysis or any heat treatment. This is a natural body defence mechanism to protect the skin against heat (sun damage), where the melanocytes (the bits responsible for darkening the colour of the skin when you go out in the sun) become activated to produce melanin (darker pigment in the skin). So approx 4 weeks after your electrolysis appt you may start to see slightly darker areas in your skin where the hairs were treated. This condition normally presents in darker skin tones and rectifies by itself over several months. Sometimes there is no apparent reason for this occurring except genetic predisposition and there is no way of telling prior to treatment if you may be affected.
+DURING Treatment Information
How does an electrolysis treatment go?
Firstly you will be warmly welcomed into the salon by Kathy, owner and experienced electrolysis technician.
You will be asked to fill out a consultation form. After your health information is assessed you will be asked to lay down on the salon bed ready for treatment.
Please advise if you have any condition that prevents you from laying flat or if you have a sore back etc.
Cushions are available to help support your body during treatment.
Your head will be supported by a small cushion and you will be fitted with an eye mask to protect your eyes from the bright light used during treatment.
Kathy will examine your hairs to determine the probe size that is appropriate for treatment.
You will then be talked through the treatment as it progresses to alleviate any anxiety you may be feeling and to inform you of what is going on (as you will have a mask on you won't be able to see).
Kathy always starts on the lowest setting and gradually increases to find the setting that perfectly removes your hairs easily.
Effective electrolysis treatment means that the hairs, once treated, need to slide out of the follicle as smoothly as a hot knife through butter.
There should be no resistance for a perfect electrolysis result.
If there is any resistance to the hair being removed from the follicle then the hair must be retreated to enable smooth removal.
Hairs are removed during the session and placed on a small, double-sided tape on Kathy's gloved finger so you can see them after the session is finished.
It is important to see the removed hairs to notice the types of hairs and which are in growing, resting or shedding phases.
You will also be told a hair count for the session so you can keep record of your progress.
Your statistics are always recorded on your file so at the end of your treatments you can discover a total hair count.
Aftercare cream will be applied at the end of your session and you will be asked to take photos of your skin the next few days and email them to photos@dbsb.com.au
You will then be rebooked for your next session in order to keep continuity of removal.
+POST Treatment Information
You will notice redness that should disappear in a few minutes but may last up to 48 hours or longer after treatment depending on your skin condition & the amount of work done.
You may experience a small amount of redness and swelling depending on how much hair has been treated but your skin should calm in 24-48 hours. For larger amounts of hair that has been treated you may experience longer healing times. Be patient as electrolysis is an invasive treatment which uses heat in the follicle to cauterise the hair root in order to kill it. I often explain this process as a "mini burn" in the follicle so your skin must be cared for afterwards.
I recommend applying an ice pack on the first day of treatment to reduce swelling and inflammation. But as we all know our freezers aren't perhaps the cleanest! I suggest you grab your bag of frozen peas and wrap 1-2 layers of paper towel around your bag of peas and pop it all into a clean freezer bag. This way you avoid any possibility of transferring any bacteria etc to your skin. Keep the ice pack ON for 10 mins and OFF for 10 mins until redness and inflammation has reduced.
Do not apply liquid makeup for the first 48 hours to avoid infection & breakouts. Makeup is the No.1 cause of infections & breakouts after electrolysis. If you must use makeup please choose a powdered mineral makeup similar to Thin Lizzy or Nude By Nature or the like. These powdered makeups don't contain water and are less likely to harbour bacteria which means less chance of infection.
Apply the aftercare balm twice daily (usually after cleansing your skin in the morning (mainly for face) and again reapply in the afternoon/evening.
I always recommend changing your pillowcase the first night you have electrolysis as our pillowcases can harbour bacteria we don't want on our skin after electrolysis.
All these things can help keep your skin happy and healthy after electrolysis treatments. If you care for your skin, it will reward you with looking good and keeping you healthy all your life!
You may experience scabbing as the skin heals in the treated areas. Do not pick off scabs as it causes scarring, as it does with any wound. Leave the scabs until they fall off naturally in a few days to a week or so. The area will still need healing so it is best to avoid invasive treatments (like peels, micro-needing, micro-dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, tretoinin & retinol high strength preparations, actives (20% Vit C) etc) until skin looks like normal surrounding tissue.
You may experience breakouts after electrolysis as sometimes the skin that lines the follicle can stay inside the follicle causing a speck of bacteria to build up. If you do experience breakouts the best thing you can do is to wash your skin with warm water and a antibacterial face wash, getting a little sunshine is also good for acne as is avoiding makeup and harsh chemicals.
A great non invasive (approx $36) device called a High Frequency Portable Wand (bought from Ebay or Amazon)
can work wonders to keep breakouts at bay.
Here's the link to one of the Ebay sellers and what you'll need to look for. Just 5-8 mins a day can banish breakouts fast. It's well worth the small
investment if you have a way to go with electrolysis sessions or are prone to breakouts.
A general guide for healing of the skin, however this can be different for everyone:
Chin area can take approx 2-3 weeks to heal completely so it can be retreated. In the meantime while you're healing, trim or gently shave hairs that reappear before the next session.
Chest area can take approx 3-4 weeks to heal
Upper lip area can take approx 2 weeks to heal - unless your skin barrier is compromised, in which case skin healing may take longer
Abdomen & genital area takes 4-8 weeks to heal. I highly recommend getting the area waxed prior to any genital electrolysis. When the hair in that area is temporarily removed the hair goes into a temporary growth cycle making it easier for electrolysis treatment. If the hair has never been removed from the genital area it is likely that electrolysis will be more painful and more difficult due to the stubborn coarse hairs present.
Aftercare cream: I recommend TK Balm which can reduce breakouts, redness and inflammation after electrolysis. It's a skin healing dynamo! It contains antibacterial essential oils Tea Tree, Kunzea and Chamomile to reduce inflammation
If you have dry, damaged or mature skin you will be recommended to purchase Astringent Cream. A treatment cream created on a pure tallow base with non-micronised extracts of Comfrey, Arnica, Calendula, Witch Hazel, Horse Chestnut, Myrrh, Olive Oil, Squalane and Clove Oil. These herbal extracts have traditionally been used for treatment of bruising, infections, burns, and other skin irritations and can assist the skin to heal more efficiently and restore skin barrier function, enabling shorter downtimes between electrolysis treatments.
+Will I need NUMBING cream?
Yes you will need numbing cream - buy a tube of "NUMB IT" from your local Pharmacy.
Step 1: 1 hour before apply a thin layer of numbing cream and cover with cling film(the cling film / glad wrap keeps it moist and active on your skin).
If numbing cream dries it becomes ineffective and won't numb your skin prior to electrolysis.
Step 2: 30 mins before your appt, apply a thick layer (approx 3mm thick) & replace cling film/glad wrap. Make your way to the salon for your appt.
Under Australian Law I can't sell you a numbing cream and anyone that does from a beauty salon is breaking the Law.
Only a Pharmacy/Chemist is able to sell numbing creams (even over the counter numbing creams) in Australia.
When it comes to pain everyone is different and experiences pain differently, but most find electrolysis slightly painful but
it also depends on how much current is put into the skin (and how stubborn/difficult to remove your hairs are). However the
the reward of permanent hair free skin can make up
for any short term discomfort. Please DO NOT consume alcohol or drugs prior to your treatment.
There are some other options with numbing:
Some of my clients now use a 70% can anesthetic and find them highly effective. You can buy online from WA. They are apparently very effective and superior to Numb It. Here's the links:
Tattsnumb single tubes:

Single tubes:
www.tattoocream.com.au/products/tktx-numbing-cream-green-55
The site has free post with a spend over $40. If you buy one of each from this online shop you get free express post.
These are very effective numbing agents.
PATCH TEST PRIOR TO USE:
You must do a patch test before use. Apply a thin 5 cent piece sized dot of numbing cream to your forearm n cover with cling wrap (tape to your arm to secure) for up to 2 hrs unless a skin reaction occurs.
Adverse Reactions to Topical Anaesthetic:
A small number of people can develop skin reactions including blistering, itching, stinging, burning.
What if a reaction occurs?
If a reaction occurs wipe off the cream and wash several times with mild soap cleanser. Most people are fine but it's best to check first as if you develop a skin reaction you won't be able to have electrolysis on the day of your appt.
+What is Hyperpigmentation ?
Managing Hyperpigmentation During The Summer Months
What is hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is an extremely common condition that makes some areas of the skin darker than
the surrounding skin. It appears as uneven darkened patches or spots on the skin. The pigmented areas can occur in one area
or all over the body. If there is hyperpigmentation present, or even if it is dormant, it will darken on exposure to the sun.
“You could even say that a sun tan is a sign that the skin is being damaged and trying to protect itself.”
Who develops hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation can affect people of any race or ethnicity.
What causes hyperpigmentation? Skin gets its color from a substance called melanin, which is made by Melanocytes.
When those skin cells are damaged or unhealthy, they can produce too much melanin. The melanin can clump,
causing that area to appear darker. There are a multitude of causes but these are the most common triggers listed below:
Adrenal disorders such as Addison’s disease, when the body doesn’t make enough of a hormone called cortisol.
Genetics, such as a family with freckles.
Hormone changes, such as during puberty or pregnancy (often known as Melasma).
Injury to the skin (for example, acne, cuts or burns), which is sometimes called post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Medications, such as oral contraceptives (birth control pills) and drugs that cause sensitivity to light.
Certain drugs (such as minocycline, certain cancer chemotherapy drugs amongst others.)
Hemochromatosis (iron overload)
Not getting enough of certain vitamins, such as B12 and folic acid.
Sun exposure and tanning beds damage DNA in melanocytes and is a major cause of skin cancer.
Thyroid disorders.
Skin inflammation or injury such as acne.
What is a Melanin ?
Melanin is a substance made in the skin and is responsible for
producing the pigmentation in our hair, skin, and eyes. Melanocytes are cells that produce the pigment melanin.
Melanocytes play a major role in protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation and they are located in the basal cell
layer of the skin. Melanin protects the skin by absorbing harmful rays, including UVA, UVB, UVC and blue light.
What is a Tyrosinase inhibitor ?
Tyrosinase is an enzyme which activates melanin
synthesis. Tyrosinase inhibitors are topical products which block tyrosinase from being able to even take the first step in
producing melanin. So the process is stopped before it can even begin. Those with a tendency to suffer from pigmentation,
discoloration, freckles and melasma, a tyrosinase inhibitor or pigment blocker should always be a part of your daily skincare
routine.
You don’t need to have melasma, sun/age spots or a pigmentation condition to be able to use a tyrosinase inhibitor.
Everyone is affected by UV Rays which trigger sun spots that pop up on our skin at one point or another.
( Pigment inhibitors should be applied after cleansing and before sunscreen )
So what can I do?
Use a Tyrosinase inhibitor. By using a tyrosinase inhibitor, the reduction of melanin can be curbed and the distribution be
restricted. All of the ingredients in our tyrosinase inhibitors can be safely used in the summer months. In fact, it is crucial
to use them when the skin is vulnerable during periods of high UV levels. They will help to nourish your skin and protect it
from further damage. These will work to temporarily equalize the production of melanin, restore balance to your skin tone,
and brighten existing dark spots.

Our whitening low molecular weight (LMW) hyaluronic acid is a highly effective anti-pigmentation agent, lightening agent and age
spot reduction agent. HyWhite is a complex of alpha linolenic acid and LMW hyaluronic acid which delivers intense
hydration as well as significant lightening benefits designed to penetrate to a deep level in the skin.
https://www.skinrenewalpeeling.com/radiant-skin-brightening-gel
Our Radiant Skin Brightening Gel utilizes the brightening effects of hexylresorcinol and niacinamide. Together they work to
perfect the look of uneven skin tone, brighten, inhibit melanin and give the skin a youthful glow. Radiant Skin Brightening
Gel is a safe and effective alternative to hydroquinone and has in point of fact, been clinically shown to rival the effects of
hydroquinone by providing superior brightening for signs of photoaging.
https://www.skinrenewalpeeling.com/antioxidant-radiance-serum-with-fer
Our Antioxidant Radiance Serum is a potent serum and a valuable weapon in the fight against skin aging. It contains a powerful
blend of vitamin C which inhibits melanin synthesis, is super-charged with ferulic acid and is enriched with vitamins B and E.
This fabulous cocktail of combined ingredients, boosts the natural defense against damaging oxidation caused by pollution,
toxins, and other environmental stressors by working on multiple levels. Free radicals are unstable molecules that contain
unpaired electrons and they search the environment looking to scavenge replacement electrons. Free radicals steal electrons
from healthy cells which creates more free radicals. When cells come in contact with damaged oxygen molecules, collagen
begins to break down and wrinkles and lines are formed.
https://www.skinrenewalpeeling.com/rejuvenating-glycolic-acid-facial-w
Our Glycolic Face Wash is a clear gel facial cleanser fortified with specific extracts and ingredients designed to brighten and
nourish delicate facial skin. Glycolic acid is natural-occurring exfoliant that holds a reputation for being one of the safest cosmetic
options and is one of the smallest molecules. Glycolic acid penetrates into the skin, bringing fresh new skin to the surface as it
safely removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, a process which helps correct discoloration caused by sun spots or aging.
This gentle facial wash provides deep, comprehensive cleansing whilst reducing dead skin build up, softening and moisturizing
the skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is a effective ingredient for pigmentation.
Exfoliate Regularly. If you're looking fade dark spots, exfoliating is key. Opt for a chemical exfoliant, which works deep within the
skin's layers to remove dead skin cells, increase cell turnover, lighten dark spots, and brighten up the skin's complexion.
Physical exfoliants can also be harsh on the skin, creating inflammation that can lead to additional pigmentation. Exfoliation
can make your skin more sensitive to the sun so always apply your SPF prior to exposure. Professional Treatments such as
the Elaine Brennan Skin Renewal Peeling and the GetGlowing Micro-Peel are true brightening powerhouses, containing
powerful ingredients to fade discoloration, brighten skin and helps diminish the appearance of post-acne scars. Both
peels are suitable for all skin types and all Fitzpatrick’s.
Wear protective clothing whilst in the sun. In the summer, the sun’s UV rays are intense. Apply your SPF to any areas of skin
which are exposed, including ears and neck to reduce chances that hyperpigmentation will spread. Wearing sunscreen
shouldn’t be reserved for those sunny beach days. The sun's harmful UV rays are capable of penetrating cloud cover even
during the rainy season when the weather is cool, cloudy, or windy and penetrates windows. In terms of prevention of pigment
formation, sun protection is the most critical step. Wear a hat and sunglasses. Be mindful to limit the time you spend outdoors.
Never pick or scratch at your skin. Picking will cause trauma leading to pigmentation and dark spots and could introduce a
bacterial infection. Use an antioxidant with topical vitamin C.
Products loaded with vitamin A,C&E help repair damaged skin
cells and even out skin tone. Every person’s skin and skin care journey is unique. What works for someone else’s skin may not work for yours.

( Appointments 90 minutes or over require a $60 deposit at booking )
+What to know before my first session?
Please arrive 5 mins early to fill out consultation forms
Wear loose, comfortable clothing
Remove piercings & jewellery (if in the treatment area) as it will have to be removed prior to treatment
Please remove makeup (unless you’re arriving from work) as it needs to be removed prior to treatment
Drink extra water 3 days prior to assist with skin healing and it speeds your treatment (as it makes insertions faster)
Cut out salty foods: olives, chips, cheese, salty crackers the week before electrolysis (where salt goes so does water = dehydrated skin)
Use a gentle facial/body scrub the day before to remove surface debris and excess skin growing around hairs
Avoid alcohol, coffee, energy drinks and caffeinated products as it can increase pain and create dehydrated skin
Do not apply testosterone cream in the month prior to electrolysis as this increases hair growth
Advise if you are taking Spironolactone or Minoxidil
Advise if you have heart or blood disorders, diabetes, skin healing issues or epilepsy
+What length of session should I book?
That’s a tricky question, as without seeing the amount of hair to be treated it's
difficult to know. I have designed a specific 1 hour appt (called "FIRST Consult" under Electrolysis in the booking link)
consisting of 30 mins consultation + 30 mins electrolysis treatment and includes an After Care Balm for you to care for your skin after.
This 1 hour treatment is enough time to determine if that is sufficient to remove your hair otherwise another consecutive appt can be booked in salon.
You are welcome to book your appts anytime as it is an online booking app which allows you to reschedule or cancel anytime
although more than 24 hrs notice of cancellation is appreciated. If you cancel without any notice you may be required to pay a 50% cancellation fee.
If you have been plucking or shaving for more 6-12 months then your hair will be stubborn, which means it may take
longer to remove because the stubborn hairs will have a strong blood supply
feeding the hair root and a higher current may need to be used.
Unlike Laser (which relies upon hair being shaved), Electrolysis needs 3-4mm of hair growing
through the skin in order to treat the hair. If you have facial hair you may like to wear
a mask in public to grow your hairs to 3-4mm length to enable treatment.
If you have shaved your hairs recently you will need to wait until your hair has grown 3-4mm
long to be treated. Electrolysis uses a fine needle-like probe inserted down the hair follicle and current applied to
kill each hair individually. If the hair is very short the probe pushes the hair back down underneath the skin and hair can't be treated.
If you have had recent Laser hair removal you will need to wait 1-2 months for the hairs to return to a growing cycle in order for electrolysis to be started.

+Need Genital Electrolysis (Bikini, Brazilian, Manzilian)?
If you’ve never had genital waxing or laser your hair will most likely be very deep, stubborn and difficult to remove. This means the current may need to be
increased to kill the hair root. However after waxing, the hair root is weakened and lower current used to kill the hair root. Lower current = less pain = less effect on the skin.
Genital electrolysis is far easier (both pain wise and during treatment) after the hair has been recently waxed or sugared. I suggest that you get the area waxed first and wait until
your genital hairs have grown out to 3-4mm in length and book a First Consultation appt as soon as possible to take full advantage of the temporary growing phase of hairs post waxing.
When it comes to pain everyone is different and experiences pain differently. Most find electrolysis slightly painful but it also depends on how much current is put into the skin
(i.e. how stubborn your hairs are). However the reward of permanent hair free skin can make up for any short term discomfort. Please don’t consume alcohol or drugs prior
to your treatment. Alcohol will only serve to dehydrate your body further making electrolysis more difficult.
Step by Step Guide:
Step 1: Order some numbing cream online (Tatts Numb/TKTX) or from the MIX Compounding Pharmacy as per below* (you can choose whether to order the prescription gel or non prescription gel)
Step 2: You may want to get the area waxed before electrolysis but you don't have to. Some people's hair still responds fine without waxing prior.
Step 3: After the waxing, wait until hairs have grown to 3-4mm long (please don’t wait until hairs are 1cm long before booking as you will have lost your advantage of waxing, and hairs will be stubborn to remove)
Step 4: Book your First Consultation appointment online by clicking here: Book Now
Step 5: Day of Appt: 1 hour before - Apply thick layer of numbing gel to a 50 cent piece sized area where you want hair removed. Put cling wrap over the top of the numbing gel. Cling wrap keeps the numbing gel moist and active on the skin. If numbing gel dries out it becomes ineffective.
Step 6: Day of Appt: 30 mins before – Reapply thicker layer of numbing gel to the same area and replace cling wrap over the top. Make your way to the salon for treatment.
Only a Pharmacy or Chemist is able to sell numbing anaesthetic gels/creams (even over the counter numbing creams) in Australia and anyone that does sell you a numbing cream/gel from a beauty salon is breaking the Law. This is for your safety,
so the Pharmacist makes sure you have no medical interactions that could harm you when using anaesthetic.
Need a stronger numbing cream?
If you are having genital areas treated (or you just prefer a stronger numbing cream) I recommend you buy a specialist numbing cream prepared by
Mix Compounding Pharmacy at Springwood.
There a two different types of prepared numbing creams available – both WITH GP prescription and WITHOUT prescription.
WITHOUT Prescription Anaesthetic Numbing Gel:
10ml tube approx $25 can be bought from MIX Pharmacy Springwood.
(No prescription is necessary for ordering this gel)
Instructions for ordering:
Text your full name and address to 0450 459 485
Include this information in your text: 10 ml tube of Lidocaine 6%/Tetracaine 4% 10g ($25)
Mix Compounding Pharmacy
3B/15 Dennis Rd Springwood.
You will be texted back regarding a time/date for pickup of your anaesthetic gel. You will be required to pickup in person or you can arrange postage to your home address.
Please keep any anaesthetic gel refrigerated at all times to maintain efficacy.
The other type is a specially prepared Anaesthetic Gel that NEEDS A DOCTOR'S PRESCRIPTION. It is much stronger than the above gel but is more expensive,
and of course you need to visit your GP to get a prescription (may cost around $50-$75 + doctor’s fees).
Ask your GP to write a prescription for the following, however your GP may be reluctant to do so if they have not prescribed this formula before. Let your GP
know what your Anaesthetic Gel is for and the area you need to apply it. They may have another formula they prefer to prescribe.
WITH Prescription suggested Pharmacist formula:
Benzocaine 20%, Lidocaine 8%, Tetracaine 4% in Modified Anhydrous Gel Base (Fraxel Gel)
Take a photo of your prescription and email the photo along with your name, address, phone to:
Email: springwood@mixpharmacy.com.au>
Phone: 07 3281 2061 (to arrange pickup &/or payment)
Address: 3B/15 Dennis Road, Springwood Q 4127
Springwood MIX Compounding Pharmacy
(in the centre behind Springwood KFC, off the M1)
You are most welcome to use another compounding pharmacy that is local to you or one that your GP may already work with for such anaesthetic formulations.
The above formulas are the usual preparations from the MIX Compounding Pharmacy at Springwood. The only way to test an anaesthetic is to have an electrolysis
treatment and see if it works. I suggest you book your appt to find out if it works well enough to enable comfortable treatment.
+Why do I need regular Electrolysis?
Regularly spaced treatments are vital for Electrolysis to be successful, so the hair is caught in the growing
phase and can be treated and killed each appt.
If hairs are growing in the follicle for a long time (many weeks, months or even years) the hair root gains
strength and becomes stubborn and difficult to remove as the current needs to be increased to kill stronger hair.
Treating hair with electrolysis soon after it has emerged through the skin means it is may be more likely to be
in a growing phase and therefore when treated it's not only faster to remove with a young blood supply connected
but you have a greater chance of it being killed if it's treated as soon as it emerges through the skin.
If you have body hair that needs electrolysis treatment that you wax (or sugar) the areas to
be treated to temporarily remove hairs that are stubborn and strong. Waxed hairs are
significantly easier to remove with electrolysis in the sessions following waxing/sugaring.
You may only require 1-2 waxes prior to many followup electrolysis sessions. Laser is
not recommended as it retards the hair growth cycle and requires you to wait 1-2 months before electrolysis can be restarted).
If you have had recent Laser hair removal you will need to wait 1-2 months for the hairs to return to a growing cycle
in order for electrolysis to be started.
+Why is my hair growing in strange places?
Hair growth depends on many factors. Next time you see your GP ask if any of your
medications cause hair growth. Hormonal changes can dramatically affect hair growth so checking your hormonal
levels are balanced is important.
If you are post menopausal you may notice that hairs are growing on your chin, neck, chest, breasts, tummy and
sides of face normally associated with male pattern hair growth. This may be because of hormonal fluctuations
but to be certain you are advised to visit your GP.
If you have post menopausal hair growth then electrolysis will help you get rid of unwanted hair permanently.
It may take a few or a lot of treatments depending on many factors such as hair thickness, how long its been growing,
past hair removal methods, skin quality, hormones etc but with every session growing hairs will be killed making
way for patches of new hair free skin to celebrate your journey!
Another common cause of excess hair growth is PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome). If you have this
condition you may need more appointments as the root cause of excess hair growth is usually determined as hormonal.
PCOS stimulated excess hair growth can be successfully treated using electrolysis but can take more time.
+What if I identify as Transgender?
For many people, electrolysis is necessary as they transition from male to female. You may have gender dysphoria
where growing facial or body hair causes you pain and psychological discomfort. You are not alone. There are many
that feel the same way. I suggest wearing a mask to hide hair growth when in public and consulting your mental health proffessional
for help in dealing with the body hair that must be grown or waxed prior to electrolysis.
How long does my hair have to be to be treated?
Electrolysis requires no more and no less than 3-4mm hair growing through the skin to be able to treat it and kill the hair root.
However it is a very small amount of hair that is needed so I suggest you find out how long it takes for
your hair to grow to3-4mm growing through your skin after shaving.
Once you have that knowledge you can then plan your electrolysis journey.
For example, if you can work out that you need to shave on a Monday so that by Thursday's treatment you have
enough hair through the skin to permit treatment, then you have the weekend to recover before having to go back
to work.
If you identify as Transgender then please ensure that you are at the end of your hormone patch lifespan as it can
increase pain significantly if you’ve just applied a new hormone patch (based on many observations).
Please be aware that if you are taking Minoxidil (for regrowing hair on your head) your results may take longer due
to the drug affecting hair on your whole body despite using localised creams.
If you are taking testosterone blockers such as Spironolactone you will need to increase
water consumption to ensure you don't become dehydrated. Skin hydration is very important with electrolysis as this
treatment requires a well hydrated skin for insertions and skin healing.
If your skin is severely sun damaged or suffering from Rosacea you may need to purchase a mini skincare kit to heal your
skin prior to starting electrolysis. If your skin is in poor condition electrolysis may not be able to continue
as the skin may be at risk of becoming inflamed and irritated.
Ensure you use a gentle cleanser morning and night and apply a moisturiser and SPF every morning. This will assist
your skin in holding water rather than losing it throughout the day.
All heat based treatments can damage but if your skin is already compromised due
to insufficient diet, smoking, alcohol, environment, medications, drugs, lack of care then you will need
some extra special care at home.
Ask about mini skincare packs that can start you on your journey to great skin!
+What if my skin is in poor condition?
Electrolysis is a electrical heat treatment affecting the upper skin layers (epidermal) and if your skin is in poor condition and/or suffering from any skin condition that has damaged the skin barrier then it is advisable to strengthen your skin first. If you are prone to the following conditions you will need to purchase salon skincare to heal it for approx 2 months before attempting to cause further damage with electrical treatments:
dermatitis (any combination of dry, flaky, oozing, itchy, red, sore)
couperose (broken capilliaries, sign of impaired skin barrier (damaged skin))
rosacea (skin redness sometimes with small red pustules)
dehydrated and sun damaged skin (particularly thinned skin)
This isn’t an exhaustive list but these are common conditions that are usually impacted by electrical treatments as skin healing is impaired.
It takes longer for skin to recover postponing further Electrolysis until skin has healed adequately to permit treatment to continue. It is highly
recommended that anyone with poor skin condition purchase Paleo Skincare's Astringent Cream (in salon) to help heal skin and restore barrier function to permit Electrolysis treatments.
Daily care of your skin is important. It is the first line of your body’s defences against foreign attack. Whether that’s a virus or skin infection, the acid mantle
on your skin protects your body for your entire life.
Salon skincare is a vital step to nourishing, healing and
protecting your skin. Start with a cleanser, toner and moisturiser that is designed for your skin type. Salon brands contain high levels of active ingredients unlike supermarket
brands which contain extremely small proportions of actives (if any) and may not be suitable for your skin type. In salon there are a variety of options to suit any budget.
+So how does my hair grow?
All hair goes through 3 phases. The amount of time hair spends in each phase determines the growth rate of hair on different parts of the body. Some
people grow hair faster than others. It important to understand the various stages as it directly impacts every Electrolysis session.
If you understand that hair is in a growing phase for a short time and cycles through other stages, then you’ll understand the reason for regular treatments. Its to catch those hairs
that come into the growing phase and treating on a regular basis is vital to Electrolysis success. If the visits are sporadic there is less likelihood of catching
hairs in a growing phase, meaning there may be delayed results.
The phases are:
Anagen – This is the growth phase where the hair will grow approx 1cm every 28 days. Scalp hair will continue to grow for 2-7 years while eyebrows will only grow for 4 months.
Catagen – Part of the hair bulb ‘dies’ and fuses with the hair in order to keep it anchored to the skin where it begins its journey to the surface of the skin. This stage lasts around 2-3 weeks.
Telogen – This is the resting phase lasting around 3 months. At the end of the Telogen phase the hair will fall out, the bulb will regenerate and the cycle begins all over again in the growth phase. About 75 hairs are normally shed per day from our scalp but extreme stress/trauma can throw up to 70% of our scalp hair into premature Telogen phase and start the shedding process in less than a month. This doesn’t mean the hair is gone forever as the follicles are capable of recovering to Anagen phase once the stress is removed. Without being able to look inside each hair it is impossible to tell the difference between Catagen and Telogen phases so hairs are normally referred to as either growing or resting.
Your hair will need to be 3-4mm growing out of the skin in order for it to be treated. If you have just shaved you will need to wait until it is longer. Please DO NOT attend with hair that is longer than 1 cm as it is too difficult to uncover the follicles and will slow down your treatment meaning it costs you more for less work completed. If you require genital electrolysis please text or email first, as there is a limit on how many clients are accepted at any one time.
