+How do I introduce new skin care products?
What if my skin is sensitive and I react to everything?
Introducing new skincare products to a sensitised skin and/or reactive skin is challenging. You may have tried many products over the
years and found your skin has reacted in various ways.
A true allergic reaction is an immunological response which occurs
immediately, and is usually severe with strong symptoms like an airway reducing that requires immediate medical treatment. Whereas
a sensitised reaction occurs after a few hours or even days, it mostly calms down without medical treatment but it may be itchy, stinging,
red, can have pimple-type blisters or hives among a few of the reactions. You should stop using the offending products if you develop a sensitivity.
Sometimes your skin can become sensitised by using products that contain irritants. Fortunately in Australia we have strict guidelines on the use
of ingredients that cause irritation. This is one of the major reasons why Divine Beauty Skin & Body uses natural skincare for our treatments and
recommends only the highest quality skincare products. Results should never compromise safety on the skin, after all it's our largest organ!
We recommend you introduce only 1 product at a time to allow your skin to become accustomed to the active ingredients
and to determine if you have any reaction on a product by product basis.
This way you're not trying to find out which product caused the reaction when you have introduced several at once! We can help you prescribe
the correct skincare to get your skin fit again!
+Why is my skin so reactive?
It can be very frustrating as there’s lots of reasons why your skin is reactive. It can be as simple as a lack of (or inadequate) skincare, medical &/or drug interactions, environmental factors (excessive UV or exposure to extremes of temperature such as heat/cold, hot showers/saunas), diet deficiencies or inadequacies and health conditions, (spicy foods can affect rosacea for instance). It can be many factors that influence how your skin reacts to certain products but not to others. A professional skin diagnosis can determine the possible causes why your skin may be reacting. This is done in salon prior to skin treatments.
+So what’s the difference between supermarket and salon skincare?
It is worth keeping in mind that salon skincare is very different to supermarket or chemist skincare:
Salon skincare has stronger and higher levels of active ingredients as it’s made to be prescribed
by professional skin therapists and as such it can be selectively prescribed for particular skin conditions.
Salon skincare is results driven, meaning that it achieves the desired outcome for the condition for
which it was prescribed.
+I’m excited to start using my products, can I use everything at once?
When introducing new skincare always do introductions slowly to avoid a reaction and if you get a reaction a slow introduction can
assist in identifying the product/ingredient that caused the reaction. These times can be extended to 2 weeks between introductions
to allow enough time for any possible reaction.
Week 1: Begin with one product whether a cleanser or moisturiser. Continue using this product for the entire week according to directions,
whilst using your existing products (but not your usual cleanser or moisturiser depending on which
you’ve chosen to introduce first). Watch for any reactions each day of use. If you get a reaction stop using the new product.
If it starts feeling red, itchy, tight, irritated, flaky or burning discontinue use of the new product.
Wait for 2-4 weeks before trying to introduce another new product or until skin has calmed and recovered.
Week 2: If there were no reactions the previous week you are able to continue with introducing another new product each week or two.
Again watching for any signs of reaction in your skin.
Week 3: Again if there are no reactions you can introduce another product always watching for any reactions as you go.
Again watching for any signs of reaction in your skin.
Week 4: Again you can introduce another new product if there has been no previous reactions from other introduced products. Again watching for any signs of reaction in your skin. Continue in this method until you have introduced the amount of new products you need.
+Will my skincare need to change over time?
Yes, just as we need jumpers and warm clothes in winter and cool clothing in the heat of summer so too does our skin! You may find that the summer moisturiser isn’t working as well in wintertime due to heat/cold so you may need to switch to a more occlusive (thicker creamy) moisturiser to protect your skin from drying out in winter. In summer we return to a thinner consistency moisturiser in order to not drip all the way into work each day! Serums need to be changed as skin changes too.
+Can a reaction develop over time?
As with any skincare, reactions can develop over time causing sensitivity so keep watching your skin over the next few months. If you are using skincare products that can cause sensitivity like AHA’s, BHA’s, citrus oils etc you may get reactions depending on how your skin responds to these things. Strengthening your skin with Vitamin A, C, E, fatty acids, peptides & Hyaluronic Acid will go towards feeding it what it needs to grow strong and resilient and less likely to react to products as the skin’s surface barrier acts as protection.
+So what does healthy skin look like?
Skin that is healthy and has a strong barrier function is firm, smooth, supple, has balanced oil flow, few if any breakouts and has an even complexion. This is your aim, to equip your skin with all it needs to look beautiful no matter what your age. Loving our skin starts from within so drink plenty of water, eat vibrant healthy foods, get adequate exercise in the great outdoors and enjoy life.
